It carries the sunlit intensity of its land: when you meet it, it wants to tell you everything in just a few minutes, to let you taste it all, to share its joy and satisfaction from the positive reviews of its wine, and at the same time it wants to express its frustration at how Southern wine is regarded, adopting a Southern identity; then, suddenly, it darkens against the men of its own land who have, for decades, turned the name Marsala into an almost vulgar word.
Its eyes fill with tears when speaking of the degradation of Sicily, it ignites with fury; but it soon relaxes, in its thousand projects, when the glass is raised to the lips.
The winery is twelve kilometres from Marsala, in that part of Sicily that is great in every aspect, for better or worse; a tough land of tough men, of families rooted in the territory. Marco De Bartoli bears the cheeky marks of a will to win on all fronts and has succeeded, with the tenacious, stubborn conviction of being right, and to prove it he talks a lot as is customary in Sicily, not to boast, but to allow me to drink: that is his greatest proof.
Today he has a family he is proud of: Renato and Sebastiano, his sons, are almost grown, and Josephine, the youngest, carries the name of their French-origin grandmother. He is also proud of his origins, as even on his father's side they were already involved in wine. He has renovated the cellar not only with taste and humility, but with the pride and awareness of having achieved what he hoped for.
