In one of the most fascinating and historically rich areas of eastern Sicily, the fertile Val di Noto, within the DOC Eloro zone—one of the most suitable areas for cultivating Nero d’Avola—lie the estates of the Barone Sergio family.
A historic agricultural company that has now evolved into a modern wine-making enterprise, it perfectly combines tradition and technology, with ancient farm buildings restored and reorganised to house state-of-the-art vinification facilities.
The high suitability of the land on which the estates rest, along with a deep love for the ancient family tradition, has driven the Sergio family to passionately dedicate themselves to wine production, aiming to maximise the quality of the most important indigenous grape: Nero d’Avola, which in this part of Sicily finds its fullest expression, alongside the Moscato di Noto cultivar, highly typical of this territory, as well as some plots cultivated with international grape varieties.
The training system is espalier, with spur pruning. The planting density is quite low, and the average yield is around 50 quintals per hectare, but numbers and cultivation techniques alone cannot explain the quality level achieved by Nero d’Avola and other grape varieties in this part of Sicily. The particular characteristics of the soil and the generous climate contribute to endowing the grapes grown here with absolutely unique qualities.
