Gocce d'Autunno Rosso Passito Cantina Marilina
Angelo Paternò arrived in Noto in 2001, after gaining extensive professional experience across Sicily. The light and proximity to the sea made him fall in love with the Val di Noto, an area he already knew well from a pedoclimatic perspective.
In 2007, he began the project to build the winery, completed in 2009, realising his initial idea shared with his daughter Marilina: the wines he could finally produce himself have always had a strong identity, deeply connected to the land, emerging naturally from the life cycles without any forcing. For this reason, the existing vineyards covering 25 hectares were preserved, with an additional ten hectares of new plantings, including international grape varieties, now represented by the Currivu white and red.
From the start, Cantina Marilina has focused production on three native grape varieties: Nero d’Avola, Moscato and Grecanico, following and respecting the natural phases of the vine.
The Val di Noto – Angelo Paternò has observed – is the sunniest area in Sicily and the second windiest region after Trapani. The white calcareous soils are also of great importance. Indeed, Nero d’Avola, Moscato and Grecanico are wines with a determined character, thanks to the calcareous soils that allow for good structure and enable longer ageing, imparting longevity and elegance to the wines. With all these qualities, the raw material is utilised to the fullest. Once the grapes arrive at the winery, everything is transferred to cement tanks, where long macerations take place to maximise the potential of the grapes. The cement tanks not only improve maturation but also keep the product unchanged. Thus, long macerations, minimal intervention during processing, with minimal filtration and no fining.
Moscato, Grecanico and Nero d’Avola are produced with different nuances, demonstrating that the grape variety is not static but alive and reacts differently. Cantina Marilina firmly believes that Nero d’Avola is eclectic and certainly deserves to be re-evaluated compared to what has been available on the market so far.
The care given to the vines is reflected in the work carried out inside the winery, right through to the final packaging. Recyclable glass bottles are used, as well as labels made strictly from natural recycled paper, and the stoppers are made of natural cork, all in line with the adopted production methods.
Cantina Marilina has been organic since 2001. The existing old vines, now between 40 and 50 years old, have been preserved. This is the classic traditional system where vines grow alongside fruit trees.
History, like nature, is a great teacher!
