Coarse Whole Sea Salt 1 kg Mothia
About 20km from Trapani and approximately 10km from Marsala, at the extreme western tip of Sicily, lies the island of San Pantaleo, the ancient Mothia. It is located within the Stagnone lagoon, a protected area established as a Nature Reserve, representing one of the most important wetlands in Southern Europe.
Founded at the end of the 8th century BC by the Phoenicians due to its favourable position for maritime trade, the city of Mothia soon became one of the most prosperous Punic colonies in the West. However, its fortified walls did not prevent the fleet of Dionysius of Syracuse from razing it to the ground in 397 BC. At the end of the 19th century, the entire island was purchased by Joseph Whitaker, heir to a prominent English industrial family, who promoted archaeological excavations that brought the ancient splendour of the city back to light. It is precisely from the salt pans that have surrounded the island for centuries that Mothia Whole Sea Salt originates. Maintaining the ancient hand-harvesting method passed down from the Phoenicians, Mothia salt retains all the precious qualities of sea salt, making it particularly rich and flavoursome.
